Ogmore Vale RFC 24 - 29 Pontardawe RFC

This weekend Ogmore Vale RFC hosted Pontardawe RFC on Ogmore Park in the first fixture of 2020. Ogmore Vale RFC hoped to pick up where they last left off having secured a huge victory at home against a strong Pontyates side just before the Christmas Break. Pontardawe travelling on the road for second successive week having lost narrowly to local rivals Tonna RFC on boxing day.

It was the home team who took the first points of the game. A nicely taken try by Outside half Sam Griggs to put Ogmore Vale in front. Pontardawe then responded well and took the lead through two well taken try’s 12-7 after a decent amount of possession.

Ogmore Vale responded instinctively, managing to get the upper hand in the pack and being awarded a penalty try shortly afterwards to take a 14-12 lead.

With the set piece functioning well, number eight Matthew Ridge picked up from the base of an attacking scrum and fed halfback Leon Jones down the blind side for a two on one which was neatly taken and scored by Winger Thomas Dunn 19-12.

Pontardawe then brought the score-lines closer with a well taken penalty kick 19-15 and it was the visitors who scored next to take the lead for the second time in the match 19-22. A period in the game which swung in travelling sides favour and saw them gain momentum as they raced 10 points clear after scoring their fourth try of the game to earn them a bonus point at least.

A passionate Ogmore Vale side never gave up and scored once again to claim their try bonus point through superior prop Jamie Powell. Ogmore threw everything at the visitors to try and steal the win but resolute defending saw them hang on for the all-important five points. Final score Ogmore Vale RFC 24- 29 Pontardawe RFC.

Next Up for Ogmore Vale RFC is another home game against Tonna RFC where there hope to improve on this weekend result and get the all-important victory to improve their league standing.
