Ogmore Vale RFC welcomed a confident Cwmtwrch RFC to Ogmore Park to complete their division 3 west Central C Fixture. The away side travelled up with a swagger about them and thinking they can overturn the home side and head home with all the points. Unfortunately this wasnt to be as the Home side had other intentions.
Ogmore Vale had the upper hand early on when the dominant forward pack pushed Cwmtwrch backwards from a scrum which led to a penalty, Karl Jones neatly converted to put the home side 3-0. Ill-discipline cost the home side a penalty to which Cwmtwrch stepped up and levelled the scores. On a day destined to be hampered by wet weather conditions it was Ogmore Vale who took the lead once again. The scrum being a dominant force all afternoon, the referee had no choice but to award a penalty try to make it 10-3.
Penalties were exchanged by both sides to make it 13-9 at the interval. Second half had no difference a strong Ogmore Vale scrum allowed Replacement scrum half Gareth Powell to touch down over the line which went unconverted 18-9 to the home side.
Michael James had an excellent game with the boot, turning Cwmtwrch’s back three and allowing Ogmore vale great territory in wet conditions. The next try went to inside centre Geraint Roberts. A great break from captain Karl Jones and a neat offload allowed the bulky centre to go through under the posts to make the score line 25-9. Ogmore Vale tried hard to find the fourth important try to get the bonus point, but this wasn’t to be, the away side dug deep and managed to cross the line after an overthrow on the line out close to the line.
There was special praise from Head coach Mike James for man of the match Lewis Pickett, the back row was outstanding in defence.
Next week Ogmore Vale travel to Whitchurch RFC in the cup where they will look to carry on from this performance.
