Ogmore Vale 3 - 26 Cwmgwrach RFC

It was a day for the home side to forget as they kicked off their league campaign against Cwmgrawch RFC. Cwmgwrach RFC won their first game last week and were looking to make it back to back wins. Before the game a minute silence was held in memory of Ogmore Vale RFC Chairman and no1 supporter Leighton Williams who is missed dearly by all at this club.

The first try of the game went to the visitors, a penalty conceded and then a line out close to the line allowed the pack to pick and go, eventually a try scored 7-0 Cwmgwrach RFC.

The score line stayed the same throughout the first half with both teams failing to capitalise on long periods of pressure with the away side conceding numerous amounts of penalties for then one to be converted by Karl Jones to make it 7-3 halftime.

Second half resumed and it was a mistake by the home team which proved crucial, a charge down off the kick-off allowed the away side to retain possession deep into Ogmore’s half which ultimately lead to their second try of the game, a score in the corner which was unconverted. 12-3 Cwmgwrach.

Ogmore Vale RFC tried everything they could but were unable to get through the tough defence the away side brought with them. Set pieces were off and no platform was set to get their backline firing.

Another mistake from Ogmore Vale in their own twenty-two allowed Cwmgrwach to extend their lead to 19-3 and with 5 minutes to go the travelling side got their try bonus point to snatch all 5 points.

A few positives to take from this match, the work rate of the back row and scrum half Leon Jones leading by example. Next week see’s Ogmore Vale RFC travel to Pontardawe RFC where they look to pick up some points and kick start their season.
